Losing More Hair This Fall? It Might Be Breakage, Not Shedding
By Cris, licensed cosmetologist and owner of CRIS HAIR

Every fall, the same panic shows up in my chair. More hair in the brush. More hair in the shower drain. A ponytail that suddenly feels smaller. And every fall, searches for hair loss climb, because it genuinely looks like your hair is falling out.
Sometimes it is shedding, and some of that is normal. But in my experience as a hairstylist, a large share of what clients call fall hair loss is something else entirely: breakage. The difference matters, because the fix is completely different. Shedding is a scalp and hair cycle story. Breakage is a damage story, and damage can be repaired.
Key takeaways
- Some extra shedding in fall is normal hair cycle behavior, and it usually settles on its own.
- Short, snapped pieces with no bulb at the end are breakage, not shedding, and breakage makes hair look thinner at the ends first.
- Breakage is repaired with bond building and gentle washing, in the right order, not with more styling products.
First, the honest part about shedding
Your hair grows and sheds in cycles, and many people notice more shedding in the fall. Strands that were in their resting phase over the summer let go around the same time, so for a few weeks the brush looks dramatic. If the hair coming out is full length and your scalp feels fine, this is usually that seasonal wave, and it settles on its own.
The 10-second test
Pick up a few of the hairs you just lost and look closely.
- Full length, tiny white bulb at one end? It shed from the root. That is the hair cycle doing its job.
- Short pieces, no bulb, rough or split end? That strand snapped. That is breakage.
- A halo of short, fuzzy pieces around the hairline that never grows past a few inches? Also breakage, waving at you.
One more clue: breakage makes hair look thinner at the ends first. If your roots feel full but your lengths look see-through and your ponytail gets thinner toward the bottom, you are looking at damage, not loss.
Why hair snaps in the fall
Breakage is cumulative. Summer leaves hair dry from sun, salt and chlorine. On top of that, add bleach, color, hot tools and tight ponytails, and the strand gets weaker all year. When drier fall air and indoor heating arrive, already fragile hair starts breaking faster than it grows. It looks like your hair stopped growing. It did not. It is breaking at the same speed it grows, so the length never shows up.
The routine I prescribe for breakage
Repair works from the root to the ends, in this order.
- Reset weekly. The Olaplex Nº.3PLUS Complete Repair Treatment goes on before shampoo, once a week. It rebuilds broken bonds and repairs damage from color, heat and everyday wear, so strands can take more before they snap.
- Wash gently. The K18 DAMAGE SHIELD Shampoo and Conditioner are a color-safe, pH-protective duo made for fragile hair. They cleanse and condition while helping protect the strand during washing, which is a moment when damaged hair breaks easily.
- Repair on wash days. This is the star. After shampooing, skip the conditioner, towel dry, and apply the K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask. Wait 4 minutes, do not rinse, and style as usual. It works on the internal structure of the hair to help reverse damage from bleach, color, chemical services and heat. If you buy only one product from this routine, make it this one, and start with the 15 ml if you want to test it first.
What to expect, honestly
Breakage repair is not an overnight transformation. Hair usually feels stronger and smoother within the first few uses of a bond repair routine. Length is the slow part: you will judge this routine over weeks and months, by ends that stop thinning out and length that finally stays. Take a photo of your ends today. It is the fairest way to see the change.
When it is not breakage
Please skip the products and see a dermatologist if you notice bald patches, a visibly widening part, scalp pain, intense itching, flaking that does not calm down, or heavy shedding that does not settle after a few months. Those are medical questions, and no cosmetic routine, including this one, treats hair loss or scalp conditions.
Frequently asked questions
Will this routine stop my hair loss?
No, and we will not promise that. Hair loss that comes from the scalp needs a medical evaluation. What this routine does is repair breakage and strengthen the hair you have, so it stops snapping and can finally grow longer and look fuller at the ends.
Which product do I start with?
If you pick only one, start with the K18 Leave-In Mask. Add the Nº.3PLUS for a weekly reset and the DAMAGE SHIELD duo to protect your hair on wash days.
Is the 15 ml K18 enough to see a difference?
Yes. The 15 ml is the trial size, made to run the first consecutive washes and feel the difference before committing to the full size.
The shortcut
I put the full routine together as a kit in my shop, The Fall Repair Routine, with the three steps above for $168.30, regularly $187 when bought separately.
